OLEDs - Potential and challenges for automotive lighting

Introduction

The performance of OLED technology has increased in the last years and automotive applications seem to be reachable in the medium term. The best progress has been achieved concerning light values and lifetime. Today’s OLED laboratory samples can reach required light values for many automotive applications with the exception of main function modules. However other challenges like high temperatures or humidity conditions are still a challenge for encapsulation. Thus the implementation of this innovative light source will be first for interior lamps, followed by applications for rear lamp signalling or single function lamps e.g. side markers.
