Abstract—Availability of new high-luminance LEDs has
facilitated a new segment of automotive exterior lighting in
recent years. Daytime running lights (DRLs) have also gained
importance in safety and brand distinction. Designers now have
options for size, shape, and form factor that were previously
unavailable. In this work, we investigate some LED-source, lightguiding
designs that have extractors of varying depth. The
extractor depths are optimized to provide a uniform spatial
distribution light along the guide. The designs considered were
also required to pass the ECE, stand-alone DRL lamp, intensity
test point specification. This work focused on circular DRL
designs (to encircle another lamp) as well as a generalized-curve,
‘eyebrow’ lamp design.
