Characterizing and Measurement of the Photobiological Safety of Automotive Lighting

Abstract—Concerns about the photobiological safety of automotive vehicles lighting have been raised recently, due to the rapid development of new lamp technology and chip industry. LEDs and lasers of high brightness are integrated for a better resolution of dark conditions and distant targets. According to the relevant standard and published papers, the optical radiation of vehicle lamps should be limited for safe operation. The measurement method of radiant quantities of automotive lamps are not only traditional photometric values such as luminance, illuminance and power, but also photobiological ones. To characterize the photobiological safety quantities of automotive lighting and lamps and to establish the measurement system are new challenges for the industry. This paper focuses on the key techniques of the measurement of the photobiological safety of typical automotive lamps. Typical measurement results of real automotive lamps by a specialized measurement system which complies latest standards are reported in the paper.
