Abstract—High-resolution vehicle headlamps divide the illumination into a large number of individually controllable pixels, which are considered effective in improving traffic experience and assisting autonomous driving by flexible adjusting of light distribution and information display in the traffic area. The development of a high-resolution headlamp system has to take functionalities, legal regulations, available technologies, and design aspects into consideration. On the one hand, headlamp functionalities serve the traffic to offer an optimized illumination and the possibility for communication between a vehicle and other road participants. On the other hand, all functionalities must be developed under legal regulations, which result in a series of specific requirements for the high-resolution headlamp system. In order to fulfill these requirements and realize the innovative functionalities, different lighting modulation technologies are considered to be applied to vehicle headlamps. The application of these technologies has to take into account various influencing factors during the development process according to their own working principles and characteristics, as well as the collaborative work with the selected light sources. Furthermore, the design of a headlamp to fit the structure and appearance of a vehicle is significant. This paper discusses these aforementioned aspects, respectively, starting from an introduction of high-resolution headlamp functionalities. After that, common requirements for a headlamp system are discussed and figured out according to the legal regulations. Based on these requirements, the design considerations of high-resolution headlamps using different technologies are introduced in detail.
