Abstract— The SAE Lighting Systems Group (LSG) consists of 8 committees that jointly manage over 75 SAE technical reports, including standards, recommended practices and information reports in the areas of design, performance, materials, and test methods for automotive, motorcycle, heavy duty and emergency warning lighting. The group has been active in automotive lighting standardization for 75 years. An overview will be given of new and revised standards in the SAE lighting standards portfolio. Standards development is ongoing in the areas of headlamp performance rating, backup lamps, turn signals, advanced motorcycle headlighting, as well as LED replacement light sources for halogen light sources. The SAE Lighting Systems Group also takes an active role in reviewing regulatory initiatives from North American government agencies and preparing industry feedback.
