Challenges & opportunities for thermal  management of high-resolution headlamp

Challenges & opportunities for thermal management of high-resolution headlampYing LEI1 1Mind Optoelectronics, Baoding, Hebei, China*Contact email address: ying.lei@mind-ea.cn (Email)AbstractAutomotive lighting has been closely following the development of the lighting technology industry. Using flexible and efficient LEDs to replace traditional light sources such as halogen bulbs, the lighting mode can be adjusted according to environmental conditions, and the adaptive LED module with anti-glare functions can provide better lighting, finer regional resolution. With the development of new lighting technology, the high-resolution technology such as digital projection lighting was applied in headlamps, which can display additional guidance information for the driver. The high-resolution headlamp has entered a new round of interactive technology revolution in automotive lighting. Digital projection lighting technology, makes the headlamp have the ability to "talk", which can provide a good sense of interaction between people and vehicles. Such a cool function is realized by the LED chip with millions of micro-reflectors. The optical performance of the LED relies on temperature control with efficient LED thermal management, to achieve the optical performance. The LED power of the high-resolution headlamp is much higher than the traditional LED headlamp, it can reach 40W or even higher for a single LED, which bring new challenges for the thermal management. In this paper, the traditional LED cooling systems and their thermal cooling principle will be introduced. In order to fulfill the requirements of heat dissipation of high-resolution headlamps, the limitations of traditional LED cooling systems will be analyzed. At the end, several new potential LED cooling solutions for high power LEDs will be presented, as well as the cooling efficiency. This study will show the technical feasibility of the application of these new cooling solutions in high resolution headlamps.Keywords-LED; thermal management; high-resolution; cooling; efficiency (key words)
