Abstract: This laboratory study concerns the performance of headlamp cleaner. The discussion
whether headlamp cleaner is useful or not is more explosive than ever. Most attention has been
limited to the cleaning efficiency. Yet glare caused by soiling can be severe even after cleaned, and
evaluation of visibility and glare remains a longstanding challenge. Toward this objective, we explore
glare from headlamp cleaner by photometric measurements. In this paper, we report a laboratory
study to probe the isoline, road and perspective diagrams in different stages, and collect the test data
of headlamps respectively equipped with six kinds of light sources (D1S, D3S, D4S, D5S, LED and
H7). The comparison results of photometric diagram are discussed, which could be a valuable
contribution to improve the performance of headlamp cleaner. Through this profound analysis, we
come to the conclusion that glare can be caused by dirt and stain throughout the whole testing
process, and the installation of cleaner for headlamp with less than 2000 lm light sources is necessary.
