Abstract

The UN regulation on LED light sources (R128) is one out of three regulations prescribing all requirements – technical and administrative – which are needed to ensure safe functioning of lighting devices after replacement of light sources.

The presentation will give an up-to-date overview of the status of R128 and the ongoing S&R activities in this field. Whereas two new signaling light source categories are expected to be enforced already in 2015, five additional categories of the same ‘family’ are in preparation. Next to this, the experts are working hard on the regulatory framework enabling the introduction of safe LED retrofits; the proposal will cover both, the administrative implementation in R128 and a set of criteria to achieve technical equivalence. Further, the extension of R128 to light sources used in forward lighting application is taking shape; the experts are defining requirements with respect to the thermal stability and contrast to ensure exchangeability under all application conditions.
