On-line Measurement & Adjustment for the Optical Performance of Automotive LED Ambient Lights

Abstract—With the rapid development of industrial technology, the "second private space"-automobiles are trending to "mobile house". Therefore, in addition to the quality performance and appearance, the interior of automotive has become a key factor affecting consumers to decide whether or not to purchase. As an important part of automobile interiors, the ambient lights are given more functional requirements beyond the basic requirements of the auxiliary lighting, such as comfort, decoration and personalization. Furthermore the human-computer interaction function based on emotional perception would be needed for improving the sense of quality for automotives

At present, most automobile ambient lights are RGB(W) ambient lights. However, due to some unavoidable reasons, there are some differences in luminance and color between different batches of LEDs, such as the production technology of LEDs. And the temperature dependence of the optical performance also can affect on the performance of LEDs. As a result, the phenomenon of inconsistent with design objectives often appears when realizing various color of light based on RGB (W) LED light sources. Under these circumstances, it is necessary to measure and evaluate the optical performance of the LED light sources and the final ambient lights accurately. And, especially, the adjustment of the optical performance of the ambient light is crucial. But the measurement and adjustment of the optical performance of automotive ambient lights are mostly carried out in laboratory at this stage, which is a time-consuming and labor-intensive process, and can not be applied to the production line. Moreover, due to the diversification of the demand for automotive ambient lights, it will increase the difficulty of adjusting their optical performance undoubtedly. This paper is to study and analyze the optical performance of RGB (W) LED light sources and the design principle of LED ambient lights. And in the paper, a complete solution is also proposed for on-line measurement and adjustment of the optical performance of automotive LED ambient lights, based on the current measurement and control technology, which can satisfy the online requirements of optical quality control for ambient lights and improve the efficiency of production.
