Lippstadt,Germany Carsten.Wilks@hella.com Abstract— Inthe last years three independent changes in automotive lighting can be noticed.The conventional light sources Halogen and Xenon bulb are more and moresubstituted by LEDs. Furthermore the importance of the styling of headlampsincreases to get an individual appearance for each product. At the same timethe extension of the legal requirements enables the introduction of a largenumber of new functionalities. The light shifts from a passive illumination tothe range of a complex driver assistance systems.
To get excellentsystems different aspects from several fields has to be considered. In thispaper it is shown how aspects of lighting technology, lighting electronic,driver acceptance and marketing influence the development direction of driverassistance systems. In future headlamps these directions of development has tobe brought together.
At first the development of the hitherto existing headlamps isshown. Then the challenges for the next generations of headlamps will bepresented. Finally we discuss whether there are natural limitations in thefuture development.
