Abstract— This paper introduces a noveloptical system for LED automotive headlamp which can meet SAE US nationalstandard (US DOT certifications). The optical system consists of three parts: aLow beam part, a high beam part and a background lighting part. Two specialdesigned light pipes are applied for both Low beam part and High beam partoptics with separate collimating optics, which can cast a very shape cutoff illuminationand to meet the special light distribution defined by the SAE standard. The backgroundlighting optics that designed by freeform optics with microstructures on thetop surface, is used for rear light and lighted with either the Low beam partor the High beam part. Only 6 CREE XQE High Intensity LEDs with 700lm perdevice are used. The design methods are introduced and performances of theoptical system are demonstrated by simulation that all requirements in theregulation can be fulfilled.
