Abstract— Though LED technology is currently entering the automotive headlighting market at a high pace, halogen will remain the dominant technology in the coming years. As a consequence halogen light sources will need to coexist with LEDs for quite a while – either in the same car used for different lighting functions and/or in form of halogen basic and LED upgrade versions. The coexistence of traditional halogen light sources, which were introduced into the market decades ago, with state-of-the-art LED and headlighting technology is leading to conflicts that finally limit the design opportunities provided by LED technology. New halogen light sources with tight optical tolerances and high luminous flux are becoming available to overcome these issues and to unleash full design freedom of modern LED light sources.
