Key Points for Light Guide Design of Daytime Running Lamps

Abstract—Daytime Runninglamps (DRL) with light guide styling have become recently more popular.Although light guide solutions appear not only in forward lighting system butalso in rear combination lamps, market penetration is still limited. Theyappear mainly in the middle-class or high-class car categories. The majorreasons involve constrains in optical design, light guide manufacturing andsystem cost.

In this article, we willpresent a reference design for DRL based on a light guide solution. Inparticular, the design will introduce an approach to solve above issues. On theoptical side, discussion will focus on favorable design of a suitablein-coupling TIR lens for good system efficiency, and prism adjustment togenerate desired uniformity. On the system side, suitable LED with goodreliability will be proposed.
