Abstract

LEDs are today a state of the art technology for automotive headlamps. Devices deliver the required 1000 lm for ECE low beams and deliver luminances in the range of 80 Mcd/m². Novel prototypes of white high current LEDs of 600 lm/mm² and  a peak luminance of 224 Mcd/m² are used to built a headlamp acc. ECE R112. An innovative thermally optimized package technology enables operating current densities of 3 A/mm².  The low beam reflector of only 30 mm x 50 mm uses a single chip LED delivering of more than 1100 lm in the hot stabilized status at 6 Amperes. A 3 Chip SMT multi chip LED for the high beam is supported by an high current LED spot to get to the legal limits of  215 kcd. Discrete electronics allows to switch and PWM dim the individual light functions.
