Abstract

The UN Regulations on light sources (R37, R99, R128) are prescribing all technical specifications to a level of detail which is necessary to ensure safe operation of approved lighting and light-signaling devices after replacement of such light sources.

Typical requirements to signaling and head lighting devices using such light sources will be presented in a general way. Special focus will be given to the running activities to amend the regulations for Front Fog lamps (R19), Adaptive Front-lighting Systems (R123) and different headlamps (R98, R112, R113) with respect to replaceable LED light sources. Thereby, the general advantages of using regulated (replaceable) light sources will be highlighted for all stakeholders. The well-specified thermal, photometrical and colorimetrical parameters of the regulated (LED) light sources will decrease the challenges for headlamp designers compared to other light source options.

The status of simplification of the UN Regulations for light sources will be reported.
